Packo milk cooling tanks

HAGRA can offer you a wide range of used Packo milk cooling tanks in numerous measures of capacity. Look at our current stock to see all the tanks that are available immediately.

Indepth information:

Packo tanks originate from "Packo n.v.", Zedelgem, Belgium. Besides "normal" tanks using direct expansion of refrigerant, Packo offers an alternative cooling system, the so-called "ice-bank"-system.
Both systems come in open and closed versions.

The models below are the most common, and will be presented on this page:

The RM/DX model Click here to see pictures of the Packo RM/DX Tank

The direct expansion tank of Packo is the RM/DX model. With a flat bottom and an elliptical outer tank it is a very distinguishable tank. This model has a capacity range of 2200 liters to a maximum of 15750 liters.
The table below shows all types, their capacity, and their basic measures. Additional measures because of the agitator engine, and built-on control and/or cleaning devices vary too much between individual tanks to mention them here.

The previously covered Packo RM/DX tank has been improved and modernized over time. When the operating system and the cleaning system were integrated into one vertical unit with a stainless steel cover, the RM/DX model was renamed to the REM/DX model. The characteristic shape of the RM tank, with a flat bottom and the elliptically shaped exterior, has been preserved. This model is produced by Packo in capacities ranging from 1050 liters to a maximum of 15,000 liters.

The RM/IB model Click here to see pictures of the Packo RM/IB Tank

The ice-bank tank of Packo is the RM/IB model. Cooling of the tank's content is done by cooling water to 0 deg. Celcius by building an ice layer in a "bath" full of water. Then this cold water is sprayed onto the inner tank, thus withdrawing warmth from the milk held by the inner tank.
Ice-bank principle Ice bank tanks are easily recognized because of their square appearance. Because of the water reservoir in the bottom of these tanks, they seem to have a larger storage capacity than they actually have.
The ice bank principle has some specific advantages. Ice bank tanks can store very little amounts of milk just as easy as large amounts. In large direct expansion tanks, small amounts of milk will probably freeze because of the huge cooling capacity of the condensing unit. In ice bank tanks the condensing unit only cools and freezes water; the cold water that is acting as a cooling intermediate can never freeze the contents of the inner tank. Another advantage of the ice bank tank is the possibility to store cooling capacity in the water/ice mixture. When warm fluids enter a tank, an ice bank tank can cool this fluid much faster than a direct expansion tank. Furthermore, this effect can be reached with a relatively modest condensing unit. This can be an advantage in area's where the electricity system can not handle big peaks in energy consumption (as a direct-expansion-tank does, during cooling). The ice-bank cooling priciple is very popular in countries with a tropical climate.
The Packo RM/IB model has a capacity range of 1600 to 7150 liters.

The REM/DIB model Click here to see pictures of the Packo REM/DIB Tank

A newer tank model of Packo with ice water cooling is the REM/DIB model. This type of tank has the appearance of a DX tank, but instead of a refrigerant gas, ice water flows through the cooling pipes. This ice water comes from an external ice bank system, or a so-called water-chiller. Cooling with ice water has some specific advantages. With ice water cooling even very small quantities of milk can be cooled, without any risc of freezing of the milk. But also very large quantities of milk can be cooled quickly. As a result, tanks with ice water cooling are an effective solution for companies with robot milking systems. When the cooling takes place by means of an external ice bank system, a high cooling capacity is saved in the ice/water mixture. With a modest cooling machine one can thus still cool a large amount of warm milk rapidly, often even faster than with a direct-evaporation-tank. Especially in areas where the electrical power supply is limited, this can be an advantage. When the cooling takes place with a water-chiller, a large electric cooling power is needed, similar to that of a DX-tank.
The Packo REM/DIB model varies in capacity from 3800 to 15000 liters.

For smaller quantities of milk, Packo also has open tanks, that is, tanks that - instead of a manhole - have huge lids that cover the entire top of the inner tank. These tanks usually do not have a automatic cleaning unit, and need to be rinsed by hand.
These tanks can be direct expansion tanks or ice-bank tanks.
The Packo direct expansion open tanks (OM/DX) have a capacity range of 300 to 3400 liters.
The Packo ice bank open tanks have a capacity range of 800 to 3400 liters.

For cooling only?

Besides cooling, Packo milk cooling tanks can also be used to heat a fluid or simply to keep it isolated and warm/cold. See storage tanks for further information on this issue.
